Understanding the Grading of a Racer

Greyhound Grades

The grading system used in West Virginia at @Wheeling and @Mardi Gras (TriState) has six grades – M (maiden), D, C, B, A and AA. There are also two different types of races – T (mixed grade) and S (stakes).

All greyhounds start off in M, which is for greyhounds under two years of age that have never won an official race.

In order to move up from M to the next grade, the greyhound must finish fourth or better. The greyhound is then entered into grade C, unless the trainer requests the greyhound to move into grade D.

If the greyhound does not run fourth or better in six consecutive starts, then the greyhound is graded off and returns to schooling.
